LoRa for low-power WAN technology works in the unlicensed band below 1GHz, so its application does not require additional payment. NB-IoT and cellular communications are licensed to use bands below 1GHz, so there is a charge.
The band between 500MHz and 1GHz is the best choice for long-range communication, as the actual size and efficiency of the antenna are quite favorable.
NB-IoT Technology Development
3GPP is the international standards body responsible for all major mobile communications standards, including 4G standards such as LTE and 5G standards such as 5G NR.
NB-IoT is a wireless communication technology standard developed by 3GPP, a narrowband radio technology for M2M and IoT devices and applications that require wireless transmission over a wider area at a relatively low cost and use little power to extend battery life.
NB-IoT uses the same sub-6 GHz wireless spectrum as 4G LTE technology, but unlike 4G LTE and other previous radio standards, NB-IoT (and LTE-M) was developed with IoT applications in mind to address the rapidly expanding market for low-power, wide-area connectivity.
NB-IoT, also known as LTE Cat NB, has its specification is frozen in version 13 (LTE Cat-NB1), and thus Cat-NB1 is also the first version of the NB-IoT standard.
This version of NB-IoT offers a peak downlink data rate of 26kbps and a peak uplink data rate of 62kbps with a latency range of 1.6 to 10 seconds.
Cat-NB2 is an enhanced NB-IoT specification that has been introduced in 3GPP Release 14. Cat-NB2 increases the downlink peak data rate of NB-IoT to 127kbps and the uplink peak data rate to 150kbps.
3GPP Release 14 also introduces advanced positioning techniques for NB-IoT, such as OTDOA (Observed Time Difference of Arrival) and E-CID (Enhanced Cell ID), both of which improve positioning accuracy.
In addition, 3GPP Release 14 introduces the Radio Resource Control (RRC) connection reconstruction feature to NB-IoT devices.
This feature allows NB-IoT devices to transfer their cell connections from one cell to another when the device moves between cells, without having to initiate this transfer process again if the device encounters a radio link failure.
