What are the Bluetooth antenna types?

1) Dipole antenna

The appearance of the dipole antenna is usually cylindrical or sheet-like. It has an adapter at the bottom of the antenna as an energy-feeding device, and it is connected to the external adapter of the radio frequency front-end circuit of the Bluetooth module.

Another way to connect the antenna is to use a rotatable adapter. The advantage of this method is that the antenna can be rotated at any angle according to the needs of the user to improve the transmission effect. However, its disadvantage is that the cost of the rotatable connector is relatively high.

The length of a dual antenna is related to its operating frequency, and a commonly used design is to use half-wavelength or quarter-wavelength as the length of the antenna.

In addition, the dipole antenna can also be designed with a planar design method to design the Bluetooth antenna as an SMD (Surface-Mounted Device) component that can be soldered on the circuit board, or directly on the PCB circuit board with a simple microstrip line structure to design the antenna, so that a low-cost hidden antenna can be obtained, and it is helpful to the diversified design of product appearance.

2) PIFA antenna

The PIFA antenna is named after its side structure is similar to the appearance of the reversed English letter F. The operating length of the PIFA antenna is only one-fourth of the operating wavelength, and its structure already contains a grounded metal surface, which can reduce the sensitivity to the grounded metal surface in the module, so it is very suitable for use in Bluetooth module devices.

On the other hand, because the PIFA antenna only needs to use a metal conductor to match the appropriate feed and the antenna is short-circuited to the ground plane, its production cost is low, and it can be directly welded to the PCB circuit board.

The metal conductor of the PIFA antenna can be wire or sheet. If it is made of sheet metal, it can be designed as an SMD component to be soldered on the circuit board to hide the antenna.

In order to support the metal sheet not to short-circuit with the grounded metal surface, an insulating medium is usually added between the metal sheet and the ground surface. If an insulating material with a higher dielectric constant is used, the size of the Bluetooth antenna can also be reduced.

3) Ceramic antenna

The ceramic antenna is another miniaturized antenna suitable for Bluetooth devices.

The types of ceramic antennas can be divided into block ceramic antennas and multilayer ceramic antennas. The former uses high temperatures (above 1000 degrees Celsius) to sinter the whole ceramic body at one time and then print the metal part of the antenna on the ceramic block.

On the surface; the latter uses the Low-Temperature Co-fired method to laminate and align multilayer ceramics and then sinter them at a temperature of 800 to 900 degrees.

Therefore, the metal conductor of the antenna can be printed on each ceramic dielectric layer according to the design needs. In this way, the required size of the antenna can be effectively reduced, and the purpose of hiding the antenna design layout can be achieved.

Since the dielectric constant of the ceramic itself is higher than that of the PCB circuit board, the use of ceramic as the antenna dielectric can effectively reduce the size of the antenna; in terms of dielectric loss, the ceramic dielectric is also smaller than the dielectric loss of the PCB circuit board, so it is very suitable for use. Used in low power consumption Bluetooth module.

In addition, when the Bluetooth module must use LTCC technology to minimize the volume of the module, the LTCC Bluetooth antenna can be easily integrated with the Bluetooth module in the multilayer ceramic medium of LTCC, which will be the best-miniaturized Bluetooth module selection.
