What is an Omnidirectional antenna?

An omnidirectional antenna that can receive or transmit electromagnetic waves in either direction, the emitted electromagnetic waves are seen as a sphere from space. Advantages: simple structure. Disadvantages are obvious: low gain and poor interference immunity.

Omni-directional antenna radiation pattern

Monopole Omnidirectional Antennas

1.1 Microstrip-fed monopole omnidirectional antenna

Planar monopole antenna Simple structure has a nearly omnidirectional radiation direction map and is widely used in communications, as shown in the monopole antenna below.

The biggest difference between the antenna is the ground deformation, the ground of the conventional antenna is often the size of the whole medium, and the ground of the monopole is only half of the medium is still small, and one side is changed to oval and triangular composition.

The ratio of the long and short semi-axis of the oval is 1.8, the monopole is also oval, the ratio of the long and short semi-axis is 1.2, the whole antenna has microstrip feed, the ground width W, and the length h at the feed gap is the main parameters affecting the performance of the antenna.

1.2 coplanar waveguide-fed monopole omnidirectional antenna

One of its characteristics is the use of coplanar waveguide feed, coplanar waveguide has two major advantages over conventional microstrip lines: low offset characteristics at high frequencies and wide impedance bandwidth.

Another feature is the use of a hexagonal patch for the radiation unit, which also has the inherent advantage of broadband characteristics compared to other rectangles, squares, and triangles.

The entire antenna feed section is prevented from generating parasitic patterns by creating a short circuit between the upper and lower levels by creating holes above and below the grounded coplanar waveguide, and the number of holes can also vary the input impedance of the antenna.
A good match can be achieved by adjusting the feed line and the width of the gap on either side of the feed line, which also makes it easy to obtain an impedance match for the antenna.

Dipole Omnidirectional Antennas

Monopoles and dipoles have an omnidirectional radiation pattern in theory, but in practice, the electric field dips down in the vertical plane due to the feed line, making it difficult to obtain an omnidirectional directional pattern as the radiation characteristics in the horizontal direction are affected.

The antenna consists of a dipole, and by isolating the dipole radiation unit from the feed line, the influence of the feed line is shielded and omnidirectional radiation in the horizontal direction is achieved.

By using another dipole as a parasitic unit, the whole antenna works in two frequency bands 0.9GHZ and 2.0GHZ, and the antenna gain is very high, the two frequency bands reach 10dBi and 12dBi respectively.

The whole antenna structure in the middle is a metal tube, around the metal tube there are four pieces of the medium.

Each medium has two dipoles with the parasitic unit, the length of the dipole is 137mm, the working frequency is 0.9GHZ, the length of the parasitic unit is 47mm, the working frequency is 2.0GHZ, the center distance of two dipoles on the same substrate is 150mm, the whole antenna with a diameter of 110mm.

The whole antenna is wrapped by a 110mm diameter column antenna cover. The antenna is fed by a four-way work divider and a balun.
