UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System)
UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) is a universal mobile telecommunications system.
In 1988, the European Community (CEC) began a “Research for Advanced Communications in Europe (RACE)” development program, in which 26 research units in Europe jointly developed a newer generation of mobile communication systems. It was called the “Universal Mobile Telecommunications System” (UMTS).
UMTS, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is responsible for the standardization of UMTS and is coordinated with the third-generation mobile communication system IMT-2000 standardization work of ITU.
UMTS, as a complete 3G mobile technology standard, is not limited to defining the air interface.
In addition to the continuous improvement of WCDMA as the preferred air interface technology, UMTS has also introduced TD-SCDMA and HSDPA technologies. It uses WCDMA as the underlying standard and is finalized by 3GPP.
3G (Third Generation) technology
