What is LoRaWAN network architecture?

The LoRaWAN network architecture is a typical star topology in which a LoRa gateway is a transparent transmission relay connecting end devices to a central server at the back end.

The LoRaWAN gateways are connected to the server via a standard IP connection and the end devices communicate with one or more gateways using a single hop. All nodes communicate bi-directionally with the gateways and also support operations such as cloud upgrades to reduce cloud communication time.

What is LoRaWAN adaptive rate?

Communication between LoRaWAN endpoints and gateways is done on the basis of different frequencies and data rates, which are chosen in the trade-off between transmission distance and message latency.

Thanks to spreading spectrum technology, communications at different transmission rates do not interfere with each other and a “virtualized” set of frequency bands is created to increase the gateway’s capacity.

The LoRaWAN data rates range from 0.3 kbps to 37.5 kbps. To maximize the battery life of the end devices and the overall network capacity, the LoRaWAN web server controls the data rate and the RF output power of each end device through an Adaptive Data Rate (ADR) scheme.

What is LoRaWAN device encryption?

For any LPWAN, incoming encryption is extremely important and LoRaWAN utilizes two layers of encryption, the network layer, and the application layer.

Network layer encryption ensures that nodes are authenticated in the network, and application layer encryption ensures that node network operations do not access end-user application data. An IEEE EU164 discriminator is used as AES encryption during key exchange.

There are trade-offs for each technology choice, but LoRaWAN is optimized for a wide range of IoT applications in terms of network architecture, device type, encryption, capacity, and mobile addressing.

LoRaWAN specifications vary slightly from region to region, based on the frequency bands and regulatory requirements allowed in different regions.
