How to build a public network with LoRa?
As you may have gathered LoRaWAN is not a suitable solution for private networks and it is indeed currently more suited to public-wide area networks. The underlying reason for this is that in LoRaWAN all channels are tuned to the same frequency and it is preferable to have only one network operating in a single area to avoid collision problems.
As all gateways in the network are bound to the same server, it is the server’s job to determine which gateway should respond to a transmission.
In large networks, any given transmission is typically received by multiple receivers, and the server then notifies one gateway to respond and the others to ignore the transmission.
This process helps to avoid downlink and uplink conflicts as individual gateways are transmitting and overlapping gateways can simply listen for other transmissions.
Alternatively, the LoRa federation can be used to set up specific channels for specific purposes. Network operators can also limit the number of downlinks in their network from the server side to ensure that low-priority endpoints do not ‘clog’ the network with downlink traffic.
Another challenge in specific applications is that LoRaWAN is primarily a data link (MAC) layer (OSI layer 2) with only a few elements of the network layer (OSI layer 3).
While this provides a great deal of flexibility for applications, it leaves application developers with a considerable amount of work to deliver a complete product. This includes packetization, downlink control, multicast, etc.
Class A, Class B and Class C of LoRaWAN
LoRaWAN has three classes that operate simultaneously.
Class A is asynchronous, meaning that the end nodes do not wait for a specific time to talk to the gateway, but transmit only when needed and remain dormant until then.
As soon as one node finishes transmitting, the other node starts immediately. There are no gaps in communication and the theoretical maximum capacity of a pure Aloha network is approximately 18.4% of this maximum.
This is mainly due to collisions, as they will occur if one node is transmitting and another node wakes up and decides to transmit on the same channel using the same radio settings.
Class B allows messages to be sent to battery-powered nodes. Every 128 seconds, the gateway sends a beacon.
All LoRaWAN base stations send beacon messages at the same time as they are subordinated to one pulse per second (1PPS). This means that every GPS satellite in orbit transmits a message at the beginning of each second, thus synchronizing time around the world. All Class B nodes are allocated a time slot in a 128-second cycle and are told when to listen.
Class C allows nodes to listen continuously and can send downlink messages at any time. This is mainly used for AC-powered applications as it requires a lot of effort to keep the node awake at all times to run the receiver.
